One of the big fads going around restaurants lately is the banning of plastic straws - including right here in Rochester. More and more companies are doing it because of environmental reasons, and it looks like another plastic staple could be on its way out.

That's because one of the country's major supermarket chains, Kroger, announced that they'll be phasing out plastic bags next year as part of an effort to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfills. Shoppers there will have to start bringing reusable bags to the store.

It seemed like a domino effect when Starbucks, McDonald's, and Dunkin Donuts all announced the banning of plastic straws, so could more local grocery stores like Hy-Vee or Cub Foods be next? How about Target or Walmart?

I've shopped with a reusable grocery bag before. At first it seems like an annoying adjustment, but they're honestly not that bad. You actually end up buying less things that way! So I wouldn't be too surprised if the days of the plastic shopping bag are soon coming to an end.
