There's nothing like a good ol' fashioned Minnesota summer cookout. And with the Fourth of July just days away, I'm definitely looking forward to grillin' up some burgers, hot dogs, and whatever else I can get my hands on.

But here's the thing...it turns out that I've been a few things the wrong way when it comes to grilling burgers. Luckily, Thrillist got advice from a renowned steakhouse chef who revealed what many people are probably doing wrong when it comes to cookin' up some burgs. Here are 5 tips that stuck with me:

 

1. Relying On Too Much Salt

Remember, the more salt you put on your burger, the less juicy it'll end up being. And come on, you know you want a juicy burger. You only need to lightly season the patty on the outside before you put it on the grill.

 

2. Cutting Patties To Check Wellness

I'm definitely guilty of doing this - usually by stabbing my patty with a knife to make sure it's ready. Apparently, you're not supposed to do that! Instead, the chef recommends using an instant-read thermometer for thicker patties, while the temp for thinner ones isn't as important.

 

3. Keeping Your Whole Grill At One Temperature

To allow for more versatility, having two different temperature surfaces can really come in handy. For example, one hot area for more char, and one cool area for even cooking.

 

4. Ignoring The Quality Of Beef

While I'll always argue that you can do things to make a cheap Round Steak taste far better than its price tag, you don't want to skimp on the quality of beef. The chef advises paying attention to the meat you use, using high-quality beef and not going too lean. You apparently can't go wrong with a chuck sirloin brisket.

 

5. Don't Move Them Too Quickly

This is what I call the "Dad Move," where you flip your patties every 15 seconds, because let's be honest, it's fun and makes you feel like a professional grill master. Instead, give them time to char so you don't end up with a floppy, broken-down burger. That's no fun!
