Apple Valley, MN (KROC-AM News) - Police in Apple Valley continue to investigate what is being described as a deadly fireworks accident.

A new release indicates the investigation began around 10 PM on the Fourth of July when Apple Valley officers were dispatched to a residence after receiving a report of a deceased man in a yard. The officers located the victim on the back deck at the residence with trauma to his head and hands.

They also found exploded and unexploded fireworks near the body and alcohol containers nearby. Reports indicate investigators believe the man was holding a fireworks mortar tube on top of his head when the shell exploded and he was fatally injured.

The man’s name has not been released.

Richmond, MN (KROC-AM News) - Another fireworks mishap this week resulted in a man being airlifted from a small town in central Minnesota to a Twin Cities hospital. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office reported 31-year-old Neal Schmitt of Richmond was holding a firework in his hand when it exploded.

The incident at a rural property Wednesday evening resulted in extensive injuries to his hand.

Richmond is located about 15 miles southwest of St. Cloud.
