We all know that you're supposed to remove your cap during the playing and singing of our national anthem, right? Sometimes even when the song God Bless America is sung, too, often times right before a big sporting event or during halftime. But what about Lee Greenwood's song, God Bless the USA?

Sure, you're supposed to remove your cap during our national anthem. But what about if somebody plays Lee Greenwood's God Bless The USA? (Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)

The reason I ask is this: A friend of mine was out at a bar in northern Wisconsin on Labor Day, and his brother was wearing a baseball cap. Somebody played Lee Greenwood's 1984 classic, God Bless the USA, on the bar's jukebox and another guy near my friend's brother suggested, in a not so polite manner, that my friend's brother ought to take off his cap, as one would do during the national anthem.

Keep in mind the guy doing the suggesting had apparently been enjoying a few adult beverages before this, and, according to my friend, became more and more adamant that my friend's brother take off his cap. This didn't go over well, of course.

My friend's brother responded that he wasn't going to remove his cap because, while it is a patriotic song, Lee Greenwood's God Bless The USA isn't our national anthem; and they weren't at a sporting event or civic meeting-- they were at a bar. This still didn't placate the guy, so my friend finally got between them and moved his brother away before an altercation could take place.

I have to say, I've never heard of that one. I always remove my cap during that national anthem, of course, and sometimes even during God Bless America, if they happen to play it after anthem or even during break in a particular sporting event, like after Take Me Out To The Ball Game during the 7th inning stretch at Target Field. But I've never had anyone suggest that we ought to remove our caps when we hear Lee Greenwood's God Bless The USA-- and at a bar, no less.

What say you? Is this a thing now too?
