Disclaimer: There is Foul Language in This Post!

I was doing my daily TikTok scroll when I came upon a post where this guy talks about each state’s favorite swear word, and of course, I was very intrigued. So the next day I did a little research and found this year’s research on which curse words are used throughout the nation, each state’s favorite, and many other foul language statistics, so buckle up!

The research I found about this year’s foul language statistics is brought to you by Wordtips, and they had a lot to share. First, the method the analysts used consisted of analyzing “tweets from all 50 U.S. states and 320 cities. [they] collected data on a variety of the most commonly-used profanities and variations of those words and matched them up with the tweet’s location to see which places have the coarsest language.”

Before diving into the main set of data, here are some interesting points they found!

  • Tuesday is America’s favorite day to swear with 39 curse words per 1,000 tweets.
  • America’s favorite hour of the day to swear is 1 am with 52 posts per 1,000 tweets containing curse words
  • And America’s favorite holiday to use foul language is Independence Day with 15 posts per 1,000 tweets containing swear words

So here is each state’s favorite curse word, and maybe like me, you would be surprised! Within the data Minnesota’s favorite curse word is 'hell', Wisconsin’s is 's--t', and Iowa’s favorite is 'p--sy'.

What is interesting to see is overall, what are America’s favorite curse words to use? I was not surprised that the f-word was at the top but some of the others did. Wordtips explained that their “research found that it is the most popular curse word online, with 11.62 uses per 1000 tweets, more than ‘sh-t,’ which was used 10 times per 1000 posts." this is interesting because 15 states had 'sh-t' listed as their favorite word, where only 13 had the f-word listed.

Now, you may be wondering, what states swear the most? Are we surprised that Minnesota came in at #50 aka the state that swears the least with only 15 per 1,000 tweets containing swear words? What is crazy is that Wordtips collected data from both Minneapolis which came in at 17 per 1,000, and then St. Paul, which came in at 21 per 1,000! Dang, that Minnesota Nice really does show!

And which State came in first? That would be Alabama with 48 per 1,000 tweets containing curse words! Don’t worry though, our Midwest neighbor Wisconsin came in at #23 with 32 per 1,000, and Iowa at #46 with 23 per 1,000!

Hope this was some interesting and entertaining data for you. All information and pictures are credited to the research done by Wordtips. Check out the article to find out some other interesting curse word stats!
