As of March 2025, Minnesota is home to a vibrant and growing wine industry. The Winery Alliance of Minnesota says that over 75 farm wineries are currently in operation across the state. It hasn't always been this way, however. According to research from the University of Minnesota, if you go back just 10 years, to 2015, there were only 52 Minnesota wineries in business. So, yes, Minnesota's wine culture has come a long way since the very first winery opened its doors in the Gopher State back in 1977. (That would be Alexis Bailly Vineyard, by the way, which is located about 30 minutes southeast of the Twin Cities in Hastings.)
So just how much wine do Minnesotans drink? A lot! For proof, we checked with the Minnesota Department of Revenue, which compiled a list of the number of bottles of wine sold each month across the Bold North in 2024. And, yeah, it's a pretty healthy number-- especially for October, which has the honor of being the month when the most bottles were sold!
