Seeing as today is Cinco de Mayo, I'm always reminded of the fact that I really don't know much about the holiday itself.  I remember hearing years ago that it was a celebration commemorating Mexican independence. But then I remember hearing how that was wrong, which it is.  So what is the Cinco de Mayo celebration all about?

"Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations."

So now you know. Regardless of what the celebration is all about, though, it's still a great reason to grab a Corona or margarita-- and celebrate some Mexican culture!
