If you didn’t know, World Naked Gardening Day is a real thing, and it's coming up on May 3rd. It’s the one day a year when you’re encouraged to go au naturel and weed, plant, and prune in the buff. And no, it’s not just a prank your weird uncle made up.

To honor the occasion, LawnStarter decided to bare all and rank the best (and worst) cities in the U.S. for naked gardening. They analyzed 500 of the largest U.S. cities using several revealing metrics, including nudity laws and local weather, and unsurprisingly, places with mild weather and relaxed laws, like Miami and Seattle, topped the list.

And Minnesota... we didn’t just make the bottom of the list, we dominated it. Seven of the 10 worst cities for naked gardening in the entire country are in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The cities are listed below, but first, how did they determine the best and worst places for naked gardening?

Why Is Minnesota Such a Bad Place For Naked Gardening?

Naked gardening in Minnesota sounds more like a dare than a day of leisure. We might love our tomato plants, but not enough to get naked in front of them **GASP**

LawnStarter’s methodology gave a score out of 100 to each city based on how nudist-friendly local laws are, how curious people are about nudists and naked gardening based on Google searches, and the weather. According to the study, the perfect place for birtday-suit botany needs:

Friendly public nudity laws -- Turns out local Minnesota laws don’t exactly encourage stripping down to tend the tulips. Minnesota Police have even used drones to catch public nudity! 👮

High nudist populations – Minnesotans aren’t exactly chomping at the bit to get naked in public on purpose, so there isn’t a particularly high nudist population. 📉

Curious Googling of terms like “nudist,” “naturalist,” and “naked gardening” -- Assuming we’re just too polite to look it up. 😳

Warm, sunny weather on May 3 – In Minnesota, maybe 70. Maybe cold enough to freeze your begonias. 🤷

What Are the Penalties for Naked Gardening in Minnesota?

While there’s no specific law in Minnesota that mentions "naked gardening," there are laws against indecent exposure, and they’re pretty clear. According to state law, it’s illegal to willfully and lewdly expose your private parts in public, even if you're just out pruning your perennials.

Most cases of indecent exposure in Minnesota are considered misdemeanors, which carry penalties of up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. However, if the exposure happens in front of someone under 16 or if the person has a prior conviction, the charge goes up to a gross misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $3,000 fine. For repeat offenses or incidents involving a child after a previous conviction, the charge becomes a felony. This can result in up to five years in prison and the requirement to register as a sex offender. Yikes.

Another penalty for naked gardening in Minnesota you might not immediately think of: mosquito bites in awkward places. 😢
