Have you ever had something you grew up with that you thought was totally normal until you opened your mouth? That happened the other night when I mentioned to my wife about running home when you heard the curfew siren as a kid. Apparently, not everybody had these warning blasts at a specific time each night.

If my memory is correct, I believe the tornado siren went off for one long wail at 9 pm every night. No matter where you were in town, you said goodbye to your friends and you high-tailed it back home. I don't remember if we had them in the winter, I only remember it being a summer thing. Of course, in Biwabik, Minnesota you would be crazy to be out at 9 pm on a winter night. Brr.

I looked up the current ordinance, and there still is a curfew from 9:00 pm to 6 am. Any minor under the age of 16 must be home and off the streets. If they are with their parent or guardian the curfew doesn't apply.

I reached out to Joan a friend of mine who still lives in Biwabik and said the siren has been off for decades now. But there recently was a push in some communities to bring them back as recently as the beginning of the pandemic.

Other small towns have had them, and some still do.

Robbinsdale, Minnesota recently did away with its curfew siren. Now, some are wanting to bring it back.

Curfews In Duluth & Superior Exist Without Sirens

I looked up what the curfew in Duluth is, and not surprisingly it's a little more relaxed as it's a bigger city. The curfew for minors in Duluth is 11 pm to 5 am. If you're 16 or 17 it's 12:01 am to 5 am.

Superior's curfew for under 16 is 9:30 pm to 5 am. For 16 and older is from 10:30 pm to 5 am.
