Could Magic Mushrooms Be the Future of Minnesota Medicine?
In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature created the "Psychedelic Medicine Task Force," lawmakers asked them to look into the "legal, medical, and policy issues associated with the potential legalization of psychedelic medicine."
The task force was looking into 3 specific drugs, psilocybin (magic mushrooms), MDMA, and LSD. After meeting monthly in 2024, the task force handed over their nearly 120-page report to lawmakers.
Task Force Suggests Decriminalizing Magic Mushrooms in Minnesota
The results might surprise you, in a supermajority vote of the task force members, they recommended that Minnesota create a "clinical program for the therapeutic administration of psilocybin-containing mushrooms."
They also say that Minnesota should no longer have criminal penalties for personal use and possession of magic mushrooms. The task force also suggests that Minnesota should spend some money researching the health benefits of psychedelics.
Task Force Skeptical About LSD and MDMA for Minnesota
There were also some other recommendations that did not hit the two-thirds supermajority in the voting, that included retail sales of magic mushrooms, and the decriminalization and state-run clinical program for LSD and MDMA.
The report goes on to say, "The national landscape regarding psychedelic medicine is rapidly evolving." New research and laws across the country are suggesting that some of these drugs can have positive results in treating certain mental conditions like PTSD.
