Kwik Trip’s New Rule Could Change How You Pay
The penny’s days are numbered, and one of Minnesota and Wisconsin’s most beloved convenience store chains is already preparing for the change.
The End of the Penny Is Near
The U.S. Mint is expected to roll out its final batch of pennies sometime in 2026, signaling the official end of an American coin that’s been around since 1793. The decision follows a costly trend, it now takes nearly four cents to make a single penny. That’s why the U.S. Treasury Department announced on May 22, 2025, that it will stop production, with the last batch of penny blanks expected to run out early next year.

Kwik Trip’s “Customer-Friendly” Move
While some people are nostalgic for the penny’s familiar clink, others are more curious about how businesses will handle prices without it. Kwik Trip, a popular stop across Minnesota and Wisconsin, isn’t wasting any time deciding how to adapt.

The company announced that when cash purchases are rounded, it will always round down, a move sure to make loyal customers smile.
If you’re paying with cash, your total will be rounded down to the nearest nickel. For example, if your donuts total $3.57, you’ll only pay $3.55. Credit and debit card transactions won’t be affected.
“This change reflects our ongoing focus on guest experience,” said Scott Zietlow, CEO and President of Kwik Trip. “We apologize for any confusion this may create for our guests.”
