The preliminary investigation indicates a four-year-old riding in the back seat of the vehicle gained access to a loaded gun and accidentally discharged it. The round then struck a two-year-old who was also riding in the backseat.

Authorities intercepted the caller’s vehicle as it was heading towards a hospital in nearby Fairmont. Deputies and an adult rendered aid to the victim until a Mayo Clinic Ambulance crew arrived to take over medical care.
