3 Injured in 4-Vehicle Crash That Closed Part of I-90 Near Austin
Austin, MN (KROC-AM News)- A four-vehicle crash closed a portion of Interstate 90 in southern Minnesota’s Mower County Monday.

First responders cleared the crash scene and traffic was allowed to flow again around 3:45 p.m. The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m.
A semi truck, passenger van, pick-up and SUV were involved in the collision. The State Patrol’s crash report says all four of the vehicles were traveling east when they made contact near the I-90/Hwy. 56 interchange, which is just east of Austin.
The drivers of the van, semi and pick-up were all taken to a hospital in Austin for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. They have been identified as:
- Van driver: 53-year-old Ross Layne Lester of West Salem, WI
- Pick-up driver: 31-year-old Hannah Raye Baumgartner of Austin
- SUV driver: 58-year-old Randy Joseph Freund of Adams.
None of the vehicles had passengers. 56-year-old Peter Anthony Norton of Poplar Bluff, Mo was identified as the truck driver. He was not hurt.
The crash report does indicate if one of the four vehicles caused the collision. Alcohol was not involved in the crash and all four of the drivers were buckled up.
Officials closed the interstate’s eastbound lanes between the Hwy. 56 exit and U.S. Hwy. 218 South interchange.
Eastbound I-90 traffic was rerouted to 28th St. Northeast, then east on 220th St. before being allowed to return to the interstate at the Hwy. 56 interchange.
The Mower County Sheriff’s Office, Austin Fire Department, Mayo Clinic Ambulance and MnDOT also responded to the crash.
