Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Forecasters are advising people living in southeastern Minnesota that the heat is expected to continue through the day on Tuesday until an approaching cold front arrives and brings the region a chance of thunderstorms.

After two straight days of record-tying heat, the National Weather Service is predicting at least near-record warmth today in Rochester with a high this afternoon approaching 95 degrees. The current record high for September 4 in Rochester is 95 degrees and was set in 1893.

Olmsted County remains under a complete burning ban until further notice. It prohibits all outdoor burning, including previously permitted burns, campfires, and other recreational fires.

The official high-temperature readings for Rochester on Saturday and Sunday were both 94 degrees. The Saturday high temperature tied the record set in 1929 and the peak temperature on Sunday tied the record that was set in 1937.

The official low temperature on Saturday was 55 degrees, which set a new record for the minimum temperature on September 2 in Rochester. The old record of 54 degrees was set in 1952.

The warmest day this summer in Rochester was on August 23 when the mercury climbed to 97 degrees. Including today, there have been five days this year with temperature readings at or above 90 degrees in Rochester. Last year, there were four days of 90 degrees and above warmth in the city, including a 90-degree day in the third week of September. The warmest day in 2022 was June 20 when the temperature reached 96 degrees.

A heat advisory remains in effect for portions of southeastern Minnesota through 6 PM on Tuesday. Rochester is not included in the advisory, which covers the counties adjacent to the Mississippi River including the Twin Cities area. A forecast calls for another day of 90-degree heat on Tuesday, followed by an expected stormy night Tuesday night, and a much cooler day on Wednesday with a high of only around 70 degrees.
