Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- State health officials have confirmed the first case of Monkeypox in Olmsted County.

Olmsted County Public Health Services says the Minnesota Department of Health reported a case of the illness in Olmsted County on August 22. County health officials are conducting contact tracing to identify anyone who may be at risk due to direct contact with the infected person.

Statewide there have been 108 cases of Monkeypox reported. MDH’s website says the rare illness is spread through human-to-human contact, human-to-animal contact and through clothing, bedding and other objects. The main symptoms include a rash, aches, fever and more.

There are two vaccines for Monkeypox, however, state health officials say the supply in Minnesota is limited and is being saved for infected people most at risk from the illness. The CDC says there have been 16,926 cases of Monkeypox throughout the U.S..
