Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension today released the names of the two Minneapolis police officers who fatally shot the gunman who killed another officer in an ambush attack last Thursday.

A news release says Officer Nick Kapinos fired his handgun during the incident . He has 10 years of law enforcement experience. The BCA says Officer Luke Kittock fired his rifle. He has nine years of law enforcement experience.

The preliminary investigation indicates Officers Kapinos and Kittock arrived at the scene after 35-year-old Mustafa Mohamed had fatally shot Officer Jamal Mitchell. He was the first to arrive at the scene after Minneapolis police were alerted to a shooting at an apartment building on Thursday.

Investigators say Officer Mitchell saw Mohamed sitting next to a parked vehicle and approached him believing he was wounded. They say, without warning, Mohamed shot the officer at close range.

When officers Kapinos and Kittock arrived moments later, they found Mohamed still shooting at the following officer before he directed his gunfire at them. The BCA investigation determined both officers responded by shooting at Mohamed, who died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds.

The report says Officer Kittock was wounded in the exchange of gunfire and was treated and released at a Minneapolis hospital. A Minneapolis firefighter was also injured during the incident and a bystander who was shot by Mohamed before the officers arrived remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The news release says investigators recovered a handgun with an extended magazine and numerous spent shell casings at the scene. Investigators are currently reviewing all the body camera and squad car camera videos of the deadly confrontation.
