Rochester Man Accused of Assaulting Detention Deputy While in Cell at Olmsted County Jail
33-year-old Derrick Rayshon Mays is charged with one count of fourth-degree assault of a correctional employee.
The court document says Mays became upset after the deputy dropped off a bag of food for him through a slot in a door to a cell at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center on the afternoon of April 25.
Mays began screaming at the deputy when the deputy returned to Mays’s cell to pick up cleaning supplies. He prevented the deputy from shutting the cell’s door and continued yelling at him, the complaint says.
Mays dug his fingernails into the deputy’s skin as the law officer pushed Mays back in an attempt to shut the cell door, according to the court filing.
The deputy suffered scratches to his neck and forearm. Mays drew blood when he scratched the deputy’s forearm, the complaint alleges.
He’s no longer in custody and has been ordered to make his first court appearance next year.
Court records indicate Mays was being held in the jail after being charged in a weapons violation case. An Olmsted County judge dismissed on April 29 due to a lack of probable cause.
The Olmsted County Attorney’s Office filed an appeal of the decision to dismiss the case with the Minnesota Court of Appeals on May 6.
