Hokah, MN (KROC-AM News)- A Minnesota man accused of repeatedly stabbing his father is now facing multiple felony charges.

The criminal complaint, filed in Houston County Court on Tuesday, says a southeastern Minnesota police chief witnessed the bloody assault Monday morning. 

A school near the scene of the violent incident was locked down as law enforcement responded to intervene.

24-year-old Nicholas Daniel McCabe of Brownsville is charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

The criminal complaint says Hokah Police Chief Kaylie Inglett was dropping off children at St. Peter’s School in Hokah when she witnessed the apparent stabbing. 

Inglett was unable to immediately intervene as she had children in the vehicle but advised dispatch of the situation and activated her squad vehicle’s light’s in an attempt to get McCabe to stop stabbing, the court document says.

The charges say McCabe continued assaulting his father after noticing the law enforcement vehicle. Inglett got the children into the school and advised staff to lock down the building. 

She then grabbed her shotgun and approached McCabe. A Houston County sheriff’s deputy also arrived and ordered McCabe to get off the victim.

He did not comply and the deputy tased him and took him into custody, the charges say. McCabe’s father Daniel was taken by ambulance to a La Crosse Hospital. 

He suffered a collapsed lung and was in critical condition but was able to speak, the charges say. 

Daniel said his son was bipolar and had not been taking his medication. He said he drove his son around Hokah to get him to calm down. 

The two returned to the shop at McCabe roofing where Nicholas obtained a set of scissors and began stabbing Daniel with one of the scissor blades, the complaint says.

Daniel said he felt the first blow to the head and got out of the shop. That’s when Nicholas tackled him and continued plunging the blade into his father’s neck, face and torso, the complaint says. 

Nicholas was evaluated at a hospital in Winona before being booked into the Houston County Jail. He made his first court appearance Tuesday morning and his next court date has not yet been set.
