A news release issued by the department on Tuesday says the standoff occurred Monday afternoon.
The incident began as a domestic assault that was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m at a residence in the 300 block of 2nd Ave. Southwest in Faribault. Police say the domestic assault incident involved a knife.
Responding officers ensured the victim and witnesses were out of the home, the news release says.
Police then set up a perimeter around the residence and began negotiating with the suspect, who is identified as 39-year-old Zachery Tussing.
Authorities say attempts to make contact with Tussing were unsuccessful over two hours of attempted negotiations.
Law enforcement then entered the home around 3:30 p.m. with a K-9 from the Rice County Sheriff’s Office. The officers were armed with less than lethal weapons, authorities say.
Police found Tussing hiding in the home’s basement and took him into custody without the use of force, according to the news release.
Police say Tussing could face charges of second-degree assault, terroristic threats and felony domestic assault. He’s being held in the Rice County Jail.
