After ample opportunities the Owatonna girls soccer team finally converted on a scoring chance with 2:37 remaining in regulation to beat Northfield 2-1 in the Section 1AA quarterfinals. Anna Herzog's goal with an assist from Abby Vetsch allows the Huskies to reach the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Huskies will face top-seed Lakeville South Thursday in Lakeville at 5 pm [Note the time change].

Other scoring chances for Owatonna in the second half included a blast from Grace Wolfe that went just high, a shot from Ela Breuer that the goalkeeper stopped, a follow-up free kick from Kaia Elstad, and a drive from Asia Buryska from the top of the penalty box that went high.

After the Huskies grabbed the lead, they had to weather a scoring chance off a corner kick by the Raiders. Buryska scored in the seventh minute with a shot that went off the crossbar and deflected just enough into the net as it came down. The Huskies put on heavy pressure throughout the remaining time of the half but had to settle for the 1-0 halftime lead.

Northfield converted on a scoring chance in the seventh minute of the second half to tie the game at 1-1. OHS lost at Lakeville South 2-0 in mid-September. The other semifinal is No. 2 seed Farmington and No. 6 New Prague who upset No. 3 Rochester Century 1-0.

The OHS boys lost at South Tuesday night 2-1, ending their season. Seniors on the Huskies' roster include Derek Huxford, Seth Brewer, Leo Gantert, Tyler Harris, Sam Henson, Sahal Geelle, and Nick Mullenbach.

In Tuesday volleyball, Faribault defeated Owatonna 3-sets-to-1, Medford swept Blooming Prairie 3-0, Northfield blanked Mankato West 3-0 to secure their third straight Big Nine championship, Austin shutout Red Wing 3-0, and John Marshall beat Albert Lea 3-0.
