Pfizer's CEO just published an open letter on pfizer.com saying he "wanted to speak directly to the billions of people, millions of businesses and hundreds of governments around the world that are investing their hopes in a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine to overcome this pandemic."

In the letter, Albert Bourla explains:

  • The three key areas where Phizer must "demonstrate success in order to seek approval for public use"
  • Says the company "will apply for Emergency Authorization Use in the U.S. soon after the safety milestone is achieved in the third week of November."
  • And explains the review process - "All the data contained in our U.S. application would be reviewed not only by the FDA’s own scientists but also by an external panel of independent experts."

Despite that Dr. Anthony Fauci recently told Thomas Jefferson University that masks will be a part of daily lives for some time, "It's not going to be the way it was with polio and measles, where you get a vaccine, case closed, it's done. It's going to be public-health measures that linger for months and months. You're not going to have a profound degree of herd immunity for a considerable period of time, maybe toward the end of 2021, into 2022. I feel very strongly that we're going to need to have some degree of public-health measures to continue."

Last month, huffpost.com published an article that explained why masks won't instantly vanish. Their article cites several reasons including the uncertainty about how effective a vaccine will be and how many people will actually get it.
