Minnesota Has The Strictest DUI Laws In The Country
Drinking while under the influence of any substance is never a good idea, even if you don't get caught. WCCO did a story the other day because a recent survey says Minnesota has the strictest DUI laws in the country.
In Minnesota, the legal limit is .08, but according to the Office of Traffic Safty, you still can get arrested if you are at or under that limit. This same site says that with your first offense, you could do jail time, pay a fine and lose your driver's license for up to a year.
According to WCCO, Minnesota has the highest percent of DUI's in the country. This percentage is determined by how many people were caught driving with a higher than .08 blood alcohol level or had drugs in their system. The reason we ranked so high on this survey was due to the fines and jail time we give for receiving a DUI. According to this article, if you receive a second DUI, you will face up to the maximum time in jail which is one year and up to a $3000 fine. Our overall score for strict DUI laws was a 76.7 out of 100 according to Sieg Friend and Jensen. Researchers averaged the amount of DUI's, BAC, jail time, license suspensions and a lot of other factors to get these scores.
Not too far behind us were Utah and Georgia, both with scores in the high 60's. Our bordering state of Wisconsin came in 43rd with a score of 45.5. The moral of the story is if you are planning on going out, have a designated driver or Uber home! Driving while under the influence doesn't just put you in danger, it also puts others in danger as well.
