The One Comfort Food Minnesotans Now Want for a Last Meal
They say you can't take it with you, but here in Minnesota, we apparently know exactly what meal we want to eat before we go. In a world of ever-changing food trends, the North Star State's definitive choice for a final feast remains a classic.
When asked to choose their last-ever bite to eat, Minnesotans didn’t hesitate, and the answer says a lot about our love of comfort food here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. In fact, our choice for a last meal is a hearty, nostalgic, and exactly what you’d expect from a place where winters build character (and big appetites).
Decoding the True Meaning of a Last Meal
According to Urban Dictionary, a 'last meal' is typically defined like this:
The final meal someone would choose to eat before they die, especially if they had the chance to pick it, and is often used hypothetically or jokingly when someone really loves a certain food.
You might have used it in conversation yourself, if you've ever said something like, 'This burger is so good, it could be my last meal.' Of course, the literal definition of a last meal often refers to the final meal a condemned prisoner chooses before execution.
The Surprising New Survey Mapping America's Final Feasts
But if you had to pick *your* last meal, which food would you choose? That's the question a new survey from insurance company, Choice Mutual, just asked residents of all 50 states.

The crew at Choice Mutual said their surveyed residents in every state to determine which foods and drinks they would ask for if they knew it would be their last. They then analyzed the data and grouped similar foods into categories to identify trends, the study noted.
And, for a majority of Americans, a steak dinner is the food they would first choose for their last meal. From a t-bone, filet mignon, sirloin, or a classic ribeye, this red meat would be on most plates across the country during a last meal, Choice Mutual reported.
How Minnesota’s Final Feast Compares to Our Neighbors
And here in Minnesota, residents of the Land of 10,000 Lakes mirrored overall national results, Choice Mutual said:
- Steak is Minnesota's first choice for a last meal
- Beer is Minnesota's favorite drink to have with a last meal
- Most Minnesotans said they would eat three times their normal amount or more during their last meal
Interestingly enough, while Iowa, the Dakotas, Michigan, and Illinois also voted for steak, the favorite food for a last meal behind the Cheddar Curtain over in my home state of Wisconsin was split between steak... and pizza. Meanwhile, pasta took the top spot in eastern states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and New Jersey, the survey said
