We've all heard of that whole 'Minnesota Nice' thing, right? Well, apparently, it doesn't translate into when we're traveling because a new survey has just revealed that Minnesota is the number one state in the country for committing these nasty habits while traveling!

Why Minnesota Travelers Rank Among the Naughtiest in the U.S.

Recent estimates from the U.S. Travel Association say that between 70 and 80 percent of Americans have already traveled or are planning to travel this year. Here in Minnesota, that means around roughly 4 million Minnesotans will take to the skies or highways this year.

The crew over at Solitaire Bliss set out to find out just which things we do while traveling that we'd rather not admit to doing. The number-crunchers surveyed residents in every state and asked about the common habits they are guilty of themselves, what habits they have observed, their overall opinions on airline etiquette, and more.

The Specific Travel Habits Minnesotans Lead the Nation In

When they tallied everything up, Minnesota *is* one of the naughtier states in the survey, and we're actually ranked first in the country in two naughty travel habits while flying:

  • Hanging our legs out in the aisle
  • Pushing on the seat in front of us

Specifically, 48 percent of Minnesotans say they've hung their legs in the aisle, which ranks #1 in the U.S. Meanwhile, 29 percent of Minnesotans say we've pushed on the seat in front of us while on the plane, which also ranks first in the nation, according to the Solitaire Bliss survey.

Overall, while the Land of 10,000 Lakes did make the Top 20 States With Naughtiest Travel Habits list, we aren't ranked all that high on the list. In a story I wrote last year about the 25 survey, Minnesota ranked as the 14th state out of 20 on the list, and we kept that same ranking again this year. So while we do have some naughty habits, we're apparently not all that naughty, or we would have ranked higher on the list.

Overall, Washington, Arizona, and New York residents have the naughtiest travel habits, while Louisiana, Ohio, and Illinois were the states with the least naughty travel habits. So just which behaviors came in on top of the naughty list?

Putting a bag on seats in the terminal, and reclining your seat on the plane without asking are the most common bad habits Americans admit to doing. Meanwhile, putting a bag on the seat next to you in the terminal and loudly using your phone either in the terminal or on board the plane are the bad habits most commonly observed while traveling.

More Surprising Travel Behaviors Minnesotans Admit To

Specifically, here are some other naughty travel habits Minnesotans exhibit while in the airport or on the plane:

    • 85% feel airline etiquette has declined in recent years (9th highest in the U.S.)
    • 8% have pleasured themselves while on a plane (ranks #2 in the U.S.)
    • 6% have watched porn or other NSFW material (ranks #3 in the U.S.)
    • 6% have overindulged in drugs (ranks #3 in the U.S.)

Perhaps the reason that Minnesotans exhibit these bad travel behaviors is that fact that we like to tip back a lovely adult beverage... or two... or three... or four. In fact, Minnesotans really like to enjoy a glass of vino. Keep scrolling to see just how much wine we bought in Minnesota!
