What To Know Before Visiting Minnesota’s Largest Nudist Club
If you're looking to enjoy the great outdoors in the altogether, Minnesota's largest nudist club might be for you. Here's what you need to know.
I have to admit I'm not familiar with Minnesota's clothing-optional community or the various clubs and resorts that allow you to take part in various activities without wearing any clothes. A quick online search showed that there are several clothing-optional clubs here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
Some of the more well-known facilities include Two Creeks Clothing-Option Campground near Sandstone, or the Oakwood Club near Stacy. Then there's Avatan, which calls itself 'Minnesota's Largest and Oldest Nudist Club.' It's located about 30 minutes north of the Twin Cities in East Bethel, Minnesota, and has been around since 1961.

According to Minnesota's official travel website, Explore Minnesota, Avatan is a 'state-licensed, family nudist campground offering cabins, RV/tent sites, pool, hot tub, sauna, playground, kids' pool, volleyball, and clubhouse. Off-leash pet exercise area available.'
Avatan's website notes that the seasonal club is currently getting ready for its 2025 season, noting that preparations are underway for another gorgeous summer:
From May through September beautiful Avatan, MN is our home-away-from-home, a secluded and peaceful space that brings you closer together and farther from the stresses of everyday life.
So, if you're curious, just *what* other rules are in place at a nudist club like Avatan feature? According to Avatan's FAQ page:
- All guests and members are subject to a mandatory background check prior to being admitted to the grounds.
- Clothing is optional throughout the campground, but nudity is required for everyone in the pool area.
- Our grounds are photo and video-free, as a matter of safety and privacy. Violation of this policy is grounds for removal.
- Nudism is not sexual in nature, especially so at a family camp environment such as Avatan. This creates an atmosphere of community, authenticity, and freedom that allows you to meet others in the most judgment-free manner possible.
- When coming to Avatan as a visitor, a required tour will be given that must be taken in the nude. Your tour guide(s) will be in the nude as well. If you are not willing to take your tour in the nude, you will not be allowed to visit our camp.
