Minnesota Timberwolves Now Have Worst All-Time Winning Percentage
While the Twins and Wild are trying to erase the championship drought in Minnesota, the Timberwolves just set a new record for NOT winning games.
Now, while I'm a Wisconsin native who's lived in Minnesota for nearly a decade now, the futility of being a sports fan in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is not lost on me. While I was growing up in the 80's, the Packers were AWFUL. I mean, terrible. They we so bad, other teams used to threaten players with a possible trade to the Frozen Tundra to get them to shape up!
So while I might cheer for certain NFL, Big 10 and major league baseball teams that are a state just east of Minnesota, I've also always been a fan of the Wild, Twins and Timberwolves. And I can certainly commiserate with Minnesota fans who are despondent over the Twins not having won a playoff game in 16 years, or the Wild or Vikings having yet to win a championship. But the Timberwolves just put those disheartening playoff performances to rest last week by setting a NEW record:
They're now the team with the worst all-time winning percentage in men's major American sports. According to this CBS Minnesota story,
With 987 wins and 1,524 losses in their franchise history, the Wolves’ winning percentage sits at .39307, just behind the team who previously held the record, the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (.3932).
And that was as of last Sunday night-- the same night they fired coach Ryan Saunders. Since then, Minnesota's NBA franchise made things even worse when they lost to the Charlotte Hornets 135-103 on Wednesday, March 3rd. That allows them to keep the worst record in the NBA this season. And the Wolves coaching carousel kept spinning last week, too, with the subsequent hiring of Chris Finch as the team's new head coach-- the 7th in the last 10 years!
Is it any wonder longtime team owner Glen Taylor is looking to sell the team? Interestingly enough, even though the Timberwolves are dead last in the NBA standings right now, they're NOT the NBA franchise worth the least. That would be the Memphis Grizzlies, who are 'only' worth $1.3 billion-- the least of any NBA team, according to the most recent Forbes survey. The Timberwolves are ranked 28th (out of 30 teams) and are worth around $1.375 billion.
That's the thing about sports, though, right? They're filled with both the 'thrill of victory' as well as the 'agony of defeat' (as the old ABC Wide World of Sports open used to say.) And then there are those moments that are more comical. Keep scrolling to check out some famous sports goofs!
