When Will Minnesota’s Fall Colors Peak in 2025?
There’s a certain magic in the air right now. Walking through my neighborhood, I’m already spotting hints of orange and red on trees and shrubs. Evenings are cooler, Friday night lights are in full swing, and pumpkin spice has completely taken over.
Fall isn’t officially here just yet, but you can already feel it knocking at the door. Which leads to the big question: when will Minnesota’s fall colors be at their absolute best?
Because let’s be honest, there’s nothing quite like catching the state at peak season - when every backroad, hiking trail, and park bench feels like a front-row seat to nature’s show.

According to the Minnesota DNR’s fall color tracker, peak season is right around the corner!
In fact, most of the state is already seeing some changes and the northern tip of the state is seeing more. By mid-September, the northern half of Minnesota will be glowing in that 10–25% range, while only the very top of the state flirts with 50%. Meanwhile, the southern half will just be getting started.
Fast-forward to the end of September, and the whole state will be showing off. Northern Minnesota will be bursting with peak color, while southern Minnesota will just be hitting that perfect halfway point.
Translation? The sweet spot for peak color across most of the state looks to be early to mid-October.
Come Halloween, most of the state will be past peak color, with hints of winter creeping in.
So if you’re planning a drive, a hike, or maybe even a cozy cabin getaway, now’s the time to start penciling it in. Minnesota’s most beautiful season doesn’t last long, and you won’t want to miss it.
