The granddaddy of Minnesota craft beers is changing up its look on a few of its best-known brands.

I've been a big fan of Surly Brewing Company in Minneapolis for many years now. They're pretty much the reason the craft brewing scene here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is so vibrant today. (Their owners were very involved almost 10 years ago in getting the state law changed to allow craft breweries to sell their beer in their taprooms.)

And Surly's familiar logo on several of its best-known brands, like their Surly Furious IPA, has been a staple in our refrigerator for a long time too. So when they announced that they were changing things up for the new year, it got my attention.

Both of my favorite Surly beers, the aforementioned Surly Furious IPA as well as the Surly Xtra Citra IPA are getting updated logos and artwork on their respective cans. In fact, Surly announced the change earlier this month on their website.

"We’ve tweaked the appearance of our cans before. We’ve updated our packaging as well. But we’ve never done a full teardown and revamp of our entire line, logos and all. Furious, Axe Man, Xtra, Hell, Coffee Bender: Everyone got a refresh. No shiplap, no backsplashes, no repurposed barnwood, just a crisp and clean look for your favorite flagships," Surly noted.

So, no, the beer itself isn't changing, but the packaging is. And it's kind of cool-- if you're excited by that kind of thing, as I am. (And, yes, I was similarly enthralled when the Twins announced earlier this week that they're returning to their powder-blue uniforms they wore back in the 70's and 80's too.)
