Move Over Soy, Almond and Coconut Milk – There’s a new Milk Trend
Contrary to popular belief, asking for soy or a dairy substitute isn't just a "hibster" thing. Some of us actually have an allergy and/or a serious sensitivity to dairy. I won't go into any further detail, but lets just say it sucks! While almond milk is an awesome substitute for milk, having even more options is AWESOME! Have you heard of oat milk?
Me either. Apparently it's gaining popularity as we speak, and it's good for you! According to Women's Health, you'll get around 35% of your recommended calcium intake per cup, and about 10% of your daily recommended iron intake. It has less sodium than milk, and is higher in fiber than dairy, almond or soy. It does have more calories and less protein than dairy milk, though.
One thing I REALLY love about oat milk is that you can buy it in the store, OR you can make it yourself. How? Here's a recipe from Women's Health:
- Cook the oats according to package directions
- Mill them in a blender into a fine liquid
- Strain the liquid through a cheesecloth to take out any remaining chunks of oat
- Bring it to a full boil
- Cool it rapidly
- Store in the refrigerator
