Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - An Oronoco man today entered a guilty plea to a charge stemming from a deadly collision involving his truck and a bicyclist last summer.

62-year-old James Hanson admitted to a misdemeanor traffic offense of failure to yield right-of-way for pulling away from a stop sign and into the path of 48-year-old Stephen Pieper, who was riding a bike east and down the hill on Country Club Road at the intersection with 60th Avenue Southwest. The resulting fatal crash occurred on June 22, 2021.

Through an investigation following Pieper's death, it was determined that his bicycle struck the side of the truck and he then slid under the vehicle. The victim was a nurse anesthetist at the Mayo Clinic and was well-known in the Rochester area for his charitable works and involvement in the biking and running communities.

The plea agreement reached today calls for Hanson to serve one day in jail, spend one year on probation, and pay restitution. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced on May 19 and a restitution hearing is scheduled for the following week.
