Planned Expansion of Rochester Warming Center
Rochester,, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester’s warming center may soon be back to its previous capacity.
When the center opened last December, it had the capacity to accommodate up to 40 people. That number was roughly cut in half when the pandemic began. The center was later temporarily relocated to the Mayo Civic Center.
Olmsted County Administrator Heidi Welsch says empty space next door has presented an opportunity to move ahead with an expansion plan.
The county board Tuesday is scheduled to vote on a recommendation to award a $237,500 contract to Kraus Anderson Construction for the necessary work. The funds will come from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Economic Security (CARES) Act.
The center is located at 204 4th Street SE, near the Government Center. It has been operated by Catholic Charities with funds from government and other sources.
