Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The city administration office is recommending the Rochester City Council authorize negotiations with Threshold Arts to take over operations of the Chateau Theatre.

Threshold’s proposal was one of three recently presented to the council.

The historic building has essentially been closed since the pandemic began. The city and an earlier operator parted ways earlier this year.

Among the reasons Threshold was picked over the other two proposals was its commitment to open the building for public use a majority of the time and because it is not seeking any funding from the city.

The administration says “Threshold has a history in working with a wide variety of local partners.”  Threshold is currently involved in operating the Castle and plans a similar model at the Chateau.

City staff is recommending a three-year rent-free agreement with Threshold.

The agreement would require the city “to continue to pay for the utilities, repairs, and agreed-upon capital improvements” at the site. The city would also purchase needed furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
