Remember How Cold Minnesota Was 5 Years Ago This Week?
Sure, our high temperatures are probably not even going to reach 20 degrees today, but it's nothing compared to how cold it was back in January of 2014.
Our weather so far this year hasn't been much like a typical January winter in Minnesota. We started out with nearly 7 inches of snow back in early December, but then we hit a week of warm weather right before Christmas. We had a day of soaking rain-- not snow-- two days after Christmas, and we just enjoyed a few near record-setting high temperatures last weekend.
Sure, the cold returned to our neck of the woods last night, and the high today is only about 15 or so, but that's downright tropical compared to the frigid January weather that invaded the Land of 10,000 (Frozen) Lakes five years ago this week.
That's right, it was on January 6th, 2014, according to the Minnesota State Climatology Office, that we set a record for the coldest-ever wind chill temperature-- a whopping 63 degrees below zero, recorded at the Grand Marais Airport. That was an air temperature of -31 degrees with a 21mph wind, the story noted.
It was sooo cold that week that Governor Dayton canceled school...FOR THE ENTIRE STATE. It was the first time we heard the phrase, 'Polar Vortex.' And, unlike now, we had a lot of snow then too-- the snow depth at the Minneapolis airport on January 6th was 24 inches; a far cry from the bare landscape we have this year.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I'd like to see some more cold weather hit us, along with having a good 'ol snowstorm dump 8 to 10 inches on Minnesota sometime soon. It just doesn't seem like January without the cold and snow, does it? (Maybe that's just me...)
