The Rice County Sheriff's Office reports Saturday at 3:45 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the 17000 block of Gates Avenue in rural Wheeling Township on a report of an ATV crash.

The Rice County Sheriff's Office news release states 48 year old David Otto Schultz of Nerstrand was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"Initial investigation suggests Schultz was travelling south on Gates Avenue in a 2018 Polaris Ranger, entered the ditch and rolled ejecting Schultz from the ATV and pinning him under the ATV.  Schultz was located unresponsive by a family member after not returning home.  Life saving efforts were attempted but Schultz was pronounced deceased at the scene. "

The news release adds, "At this time, it appears to be a single unit ATV crash.  Schultz was not wearing a helmet nor was he restrained in the ATV's restraint system.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.  Schultz was the lone occupant of the ATV."

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.

Rice County Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Nerstrand Fire Department, North Ambulance and North Air Care.
