Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - An effort to develop affordable and assisted housing for single mothers in the Rochester area has been given another boost. The Coalition for Rochester Area Housing made its first funding recommendation by agreeing to provide $320,000 to the Jeremiah Program to help finance the construction of 40 units of two and three-bedroom housing units on the organization’s planned campus in Rochester.

“The Jeremiah Program is a proven transformational approach that breaks the cycle of multi-generational poverty and provides broad community benefit,” says Steve Borchardt, Director of the Coalition for Rochester Area Housing. “Stable, affordable housing is a cornerstone of healthy communities, and the Coalition is pleased to contribute funding toward housing units for 40 families in the program.”

The Olmsted County Housing and Redevelopment Authority recently voted to approve a request for annual payments of $70,000 to the Jeremiah Program to help subsidize the rent on 9 of the housing units over a 10 year period, beginning in 2020. The Rochester City Council is also being asked to extend assistance through Tax Increment Financing.

The Jeremiah Program helps provide safe, stable and affordable housing, educational assistance, early childhood education and life skills to low-income single mothers and their children.
