Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester police say a 24-year-old man was transported to St. Marys Hospital after officers responded early Saturday to a report of an assault and robbery.

Police Captain Casey Moilanen says the officers found the man on the ground bleeding from his nose and with bumps on his head near the intersection of 4th Avenue and 4th Street Southwest around 2:20 a.m. The man was unable to stand on his own but later spoke with investigators and described how he was attacked by the occupants of a silver car while he and a 24-year-old woman were walking through the neighborhood after leaving a nearby downtown Rochester bar.

The man told police he began approaching the vehicle after it parked near them and he thought he knew the driver. It was after he realized his mistake and was walking back to where the woman was waiting when the five or six occupants of the car attacked him by repeatedly punching and kicking him. The woman also reported she was shoved and one of the men attempted to steal her purse before the group got back into the car and sped away.

Please later located the car in northeast Rochester and arrested the two occupants. The men, 21-year-old Tabarie Gunsallus of Austin and an 18-year-old Ochonge Gilo of Rochester, were booked into the Olmsted County jail on suspicion of simple robbery and fifth-degree assault. They told police they had dropped off the other occupants of the vehicle earlier and declined to identify them. They also claimed the victim in the case had pulled out a knife and approached their vehicle in a threatening manner.
