Rochester Motorists Warned of New Detour, Lane Closures & Delays
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A major road project in Rochester is entering a new phase that will require a significant detour.
Olmsted County Public Works says the $4.2 million reconstruction of 55th Street Northwest is shifting this week to the section running from 18th Avenue to West River Road. That portion of the road will be closed and detoured south on 18th Avenue to 41st Street Northwest. Traffic will be limited to a single lane in each direction between Bandel Road and 18th Avenue. Motorists are advised to expect significant delays and seek alternate routes if possible. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.
The ongoing sewer infrastructure work taking place in downtown Rochester will require the closing of the intersection of West Center Street and 1st Avenue starting Monday. Rochester Public Works is also advising that westbound traffic on Center Street will be allowed to turn north onto 1st Avenue Northwest, while southbound traffic on 1st Avenue will be allowed to turn right onto westbound Center Street. Looking ahead, North Broadway from Center Street to Civic Center Drive will be opened to a single lane of traffic in each direction on Wednesday.
Rochester motorists are also being told to expect significant delays due to some repair work on the Highway 14 Bridge over Bear Creek in southeast Rochester. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the reconstruction of the bridge joints will reduce westbound traffic to a single lane between Marion Road and 11th Avenue Southeast from Monday through August 20th.
Lane closures will also be needed along a stretch of Highway 52 north of Rochester for bridge pier work in Oronoco. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the left lane closures will occur in both directions of travel through the end of October to allow crews to strengthen and protect the piers on the Highway 52 bridges over the Zumbro River. MnDOT is anticipating the project will cause traffic slowdowns and backups during peak travel periods.
