Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  A proposal to extend Rochester’s local sales tax will soon be in front of the Minnesota legislature.

The City Council voted 6-1 Monday to seek authorization from the legislature to extend the tax through the year 2040. Projections indicate the tax would collect more than $200-million dollars during that time and the city has a list of proposed projects the money would pay for.

The proposal calls for spending $50-million on street projects, $50 million on housing-related initiatives, $40 million to maintain the flood control system and $65 million on a regional community or recreational complex.

Councilmember Molly Dennis cast the only “nay” vote.

The proposed extension also needs to be approved by local voters. Voters approved an extension in 2013 and the tax is projected to end in 2024. City officials say the tax has generated annual collections of $12 - $13-million.

The overall local tax is .75-percent. A third (.25%) is used to pay for DMC-related projects.
