Rochester Woman Admits to Arson Charge

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester woman is scheduled to be sentenced in December for intentionally starting a fire in a Rochester condominium complex earlier this year.

35-year-old Angela Spears recently entered a guilty plea to a second-degree arson charge in Olmsted County Court. She was arrested in June after Rochester Police responded to reports of a fire in a residence in the 600 blocks of Northern Hills Drive and found a fire in a bedroom had been put out by the occupants using a fire extinguisher.

The officers were told Spears had entered the condo, gathered some clothing, and then set the items on fire after placing them in a pile on a bed. It was also alleged that she smashed a mirror in the residence with a baseball bat. The police report on the incident indicated she was still at the scene when officers arrived, even though she was under a court order to stay away from the property.

The plea agreement also included a guilty plea to a felony count of motor vehicle theft. The deal calls for Spears to receive a stayed prison sentence and treatment.
