Senior Center (Now Named 125 LIVE) Groundbreaking
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A groundbreaking ceremony was held today next to the Rec Center in northwest Rochester where construction crews are busy building the city’s new Senior Center.
The event was also used to unveil a new name and logo for the organization, which plans to move into the new $25 million facility in the fall of next year. The new name is “125 LIVE,” with the number referencing the address of the Rec Center, while LIVE was chosen as part of an effort by the organization to be more inclusive and avoid any stigma associated with the word senior.
The group, which currently has around 1500 members, has launched by capital fundraising campaign aimed at raising $2.3 million to furnish and equip the new center, which is being built using city sales tax revenues. 125 LIVE is also seeking approximately an additional $500,000 in donations to fund a variety of individual enhancements, including an art studio, billiards room, woodworking shop, and fitness center. Donations are being accepted through the 125 LIVE website.
The organization and Park Department continue working on a plan to deal with the estimated $1 million construction funding shortfall and an agreement may be ready for consideration by the City Council in time for its July 20th meeting.
