Statement From Resigning Rochester Schools Superintendent

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The current Rochester School District Superintendent issued a statement today concerning his decision to step down this summer.

The Rochester School Board late Tuesday night voted to accept the resignation of Superintendent Michael Munoz, effective June 30th. The announcement followed allegations of plagiarism involving speeches and writings that resulted in a petition signed by over 1000 people calling for his resignation.

In his statement, which was included in a message sent out to the families of Rochester School District the students, Munoz apologized for "making choices that have set a poor example for our students" and for creating a distraction from the school system's mission. He also addressed his agreement to stay on the job until after the end of the current school year by listing a number of major decisions and actions that need to be taken over the next few months, including planning for changes in school attendance boundaries and budget decisions. Munoz stated, "a disruption in district leadership now would hinder our district's ability to accomplish these essential tasks."

Munoz also says it will give the school board time to find and hire a new superintendent. He went on to say his first priority is the school district's students and that he believes his decision is "best for their futures."

School board President Jean Marvin says the board is expected to make decisions concerning the hiring process at its next meeting. That could include hiring a consultant to assist in finding the next top school administrator.

This is the full statement by Superintendent Munoz:

I first want to apologize for making choices that have set a poor example for our students and have caused a distraction from our mission. We have critical work happening in our schools every day, especially now. We need our students back safely in their learning environments, we are building four new schools and making other major improvements, we are hiring for key equity roles, and we are building an inclusive system that will ensure success for all students. In the next few months, we will need to have important boundary discussions, make major budget decisions, and finalize staffing for next year. A disruption in district leadership now would hinder our district’s ability to accomplish these essential tasks. A resignation effective June 30, 2021, gives the Board time to carry out one of its most important responsibilities—to hire the best leader for our district. I feel fortunate to have worked side-by-side with amazing students, families, staff, and community partners in our district. I remain committed to Rochester Public Schools and this community, and I will focus my remaining months on making the most of the opportunities in front of us. My first priority is the children of Rochester Public Schools, and I believe this decision is best for their futures.
