The Geese in Rochester Don’t Need Your Food
City officials would like to remind you that you shouldn't feed the geese in Rochester. and there are a couple of reasons why it's discouraged. First, the foods most commonly given to the geese, bread and crackers, offer no nutritional value to the bird. It's essentially junk food and according to geeserelief.com it can cause the birds to become malnourished.
It also makes them poop more and we already have plenty of goose poop around town. Goose poop is only a nuisance for us on sidewalks but it is a real problem for birds in the water. Excessive feces in their water can lead to diseases that really harm the animal.
So the next time you take your kids on a walk around Silver Lake stop and watch the geese, but please do not feed them.
