It's finally Cowboy Christmas. If you follow rodeo at all, you know what I'm talking about. Every December, the best cowboys, and cowgirls in the world meet up in Los Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). I come from a family that was actively involved in rodeo, so every December we watched it. One of my goals when I went into TV, was to be a sideline reporter for professional rodeo.

NFR started on December 5th and goes through Saturday, December 14th. I was watching steer wrestling last night and heard there was a Minnesota cowboy competing. Later I found out that there were two cowboys from the land of ten thousand lakes trying to bring home the biggest belt buckle of their career.

The first is Tanner Aus from Granite Falls, Minnesota. He is competing in the Bareback competition. He came into NFR with bib number 109 according to the official site. We are only halfway through NFR and Aus is doing okay. With bareback, half the score goes to the horse and the other half goes the rider. Here's how he has done so far.

  • Round 1: No Score
  • Round 2: 82.5 points
  • Round 3: 90.0 (1st place finish in the round)
  • Round 4: 83.5
  • Round 5: 89.5 (5th place finish in the round)

Then there is J.D. Straxness who is a steer wrestler from Milan, Minnesota. He is doing quite well. He came into NFR ranking 4th in the world, with season earnings of $145,150. Steer Wrestling is all based on how fast you bring down the steer. Here is how he has been doing.

  • Round 1: 3.8 seconds (tied for 2nd and 3rd place round finish)
  • Round 2: 4.3 seconds (tied for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place round finish)
  • Round 3: 4.3 seconds (tied for 4th, 5th and 6th place round finish)
  • Round 4: 3.9 seconds (4th place round finish)
  • Round 5: No Time

We should have more results later this week on how these two cowboys finished. If you would like to keep up with standings and results, you can through the NFR website.  It's so cool to see that Minnesota is represented this year.
