Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Two more elderly residents of Olmsted County have died after contracting COVID-19.

The Minnesota Department of Health today reported both deaths involved people who were in their 90s and lived in long-term care facilities. There have now been five 5coronavirus related deaths in Olmsted County this week and the overall number of deaths in the county associated with the new virus has risen to 20. Statewide, the health department today reported four new COVID-19 deaths which raised the overall death toll to 1499.

A total of 806 new COVID-19 infections were detected in Minnesota on Friday, including 24 new cases in Olmsted County where the daily count of new cases reached a new high mark at 39 on Thursday. Just over 16,000 tests for COVID-19 were completed on Friday.

The number of people hospitalized because of the new viral illness has declined slightly over the past week. There are currently 241 people hospitalized and 121 of those patients are being treated in an intensive care unit.
