Much like last weekend, if you're heading up to the Twin Cities this weekend, watch out for a section of Highway-52 that will be closed.

And, unlike last weekend, when coming back south to Rochester was impacted, this weekend,  going UP to the Twin Cities along northbound Highway-52 (which we've all traveled on too many times to count, right?) could take you some extra time.

That's because the section of southbound Highway-52 (U.S. Highway 52, if you're being all specific) between I-494 in Inver Grove Heights north to I-94 in Saint Paul will be closed. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) says that the northbound stretch of Highway-52 starting at I-494 north to Plato Blvd will be closed from 9 pm Friday, May 14th through 5 am Monday, May 17th.

And, unlike last weekend, there are at least two big events going on that might cause you to head to the Cities this weekend. The Twins are back at home, taking on the Oakland A's Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Target Field. And, the Twins' new Triple-A affiliate, the Saint Paul Saints are also playing at home this weekend, taking on the Iowa Cubs Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well.

So, if you ARE heading up to the Twin Cities this weekend, here's the official word from MnDOT on why your travels could be interrupted:

Hwy 52 will be resurfaced between I-494 in Inver Grove Heights and Hwy 156/Concord St. in St. Paul. We will also be repairing concrete on Hwy 52 between Concord St. and Plato Blvd. in St. Paul. Hwy 52 will have seven weekend directional closures and there also will be ramp closures associated with the project.

MnDOT says the official detour for this weekend while that stretch of northbound Highway-52 is closed is as follows:

Of course, if you are heading up to the Twin Cities this weekend, that's not the only stretch of Highway-52 where you'll encounter some orange construction barrels. MnDOT is also doing some major work along that route that will eventually redo that Highway-57 intersection at Hader. But currently, you'll find single-lane traffic near Cannon Falls.
