Bail Lowered For Mother of Newborns Found in Mississippi River
Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Goodhue County judge today agreed to lower the conditional bail set for the Red Wing area woman charged in connection with the death of her newborn son in 2003.
50-year-old Jennifer Matter was in court this morning for her first appearance since she was charged earlier this month with two counts of second-degree murder. She is accused of causing the death of the infant, whose body was discovered in Lake Pepin at Frontenac 19 years ago. Goodhue County authorities say DNA testing also identified her as the mother of a newborn girl who was found in the Mississippi River at Red Wing in 1999, but she has not been charged in that case.
The judge's order issued after today's court hearing lowered the amount of bail required for Matter's release on conditions from $750,000 to $150,000. Her non-conditional bail remains set at $1.5 million.
Matter is due back in court for an evidentiary hearing on July 20.
