Bed Bath & Beyond Is Returning to Minnesota
Bed Bath & Beyond was a once-popular retail store with over 10 locations in Minnesota. While all of those locations closed nearly three years ago during the company's bankruptcy-related shutdown, the chain has now included Minnesota as the site for a new version of its stores.
The History and Fall of Bed Bath & Beyond in Minnesota
The online home furnishing and home goods chain Bed Bath & Beyond traces its roots back to 1971, when founders Warren Eisenberg and Leonard Feinstein opened the first store in Springfield, New Jersey. Back then, the chain was known as Bed ’n Bath. The company expanded through the 1970s and 1980s, and changed its name to more familiar Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987.
Bed Bath & Beyond expanded from the East Coast and eventually opened over 10 locations here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, in places like Apple Valley, Bloomington, Coon Rapids, Duluth, Eagan, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Rochester, Roseville, St. Cloud, and Woodbury.

Eventually, those locations all closed as the company went through bankruptcy proceedings, though its online store remained open. By the end of 2023, all of its locations in Minnesota had closed, including its location in Rochester (which is now the site of Total Wine & More, which opened in late 2024).
Details on the New Bed Bath & Beyond Minnesota Location
But now, that could change. According to this BusinessWire story, a Minnesota location has been included in the first phase of the nationwide rollout of a new Bed Bath & Beyond + The Container Store retail concept. The story said the new retail format will 'bring together home essentials, storage and organization, custom spaces and home services under one roof.'
Initially, BusinessWire said, the chain intends to open 22 different locations of the new Bed Bath & Beyond + The Container Store format, with the first location set to open soon in Texas. BusinessWire said the Minnesota location of its new concept would be located in Minneapolis, but according to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal (MSPBJ), the new store concept will actually be located in Edina.
The Container Store, located just off France Avenue South at 3825 Gallagher Drive, will apparently be the first Minnesota location of the new combined format. MSPBJ noted that the store now sells storage supplies and organizational materials it's known for, as well as bedding, bath, kitchen, and other home goods that Bed Bath & Beyond sells.
How the New Midwest Retail Rollout Impacts Minnesota
Outside of Minnesota, the next closest location of the new Bed Bath & Beyond + The Container Store concept would be in either Chicago, Northbrook, or Oak Brook, Illinois. No Wisconsin or Iowa cities were included on the first list of new locations.
While it's impressive that Bed Bath & Beyond is planning on opening new brick-and-mortar locations, that's not been the case for many formerly popular stores. Keep scrolling to check out 50 once-beloved retail chains that weren't successful and are now not around anywhere anymore.
