Just when human resource employees at Target's corporate headquarters in Minneapolis might have thought all those layoffs were finally done -- the company cut a massive 1,700 jobs last week -- today came word there were a few more cuts.

Their own jobs.

Yes, in a cruel, ironic twist, those same employees who had to help the Minnesota-based retailer tell those thousands of other employees that their services were no longer needed last week -- which couldn't have been a very fun task, I'm guessing --  came into work this week only to find THEIR positions were now being eliminated, as well.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that "Target Corp. laid off 40 employees Thursday from its human resources teams, whose departure was delayed because they were needed to help with last week's mass corporate layoff, the retailer confirmed."

Any time you're let go from a job, even if your "position is being eliminated," it's not fun. I know, I've been there. And even though letting people go is no doubt part of the job description when you work in HR, there's almost a double-whammy here for these 40 employees. I'm not sure when they learned their positions were being eliminated, but I'm guessing it wasn't until after the initial cuts were made -- and after they probably thought they'd escaped the corporate ax.

I realize massive corporate layoffs are a part of the way business works these days, and it's not easy for ANYONE who loses their job. But this almost seems a little more cruel. It's almost like the company is saying, "Thanks for helping us cut all those positions last week. We couldn't have done it without you! Oh, yeah. One more thing: YOUR position is also being cut. Here's a box for all your stuff..."
