Even die-hard country fans may not have recognized Chris Stapleton during Sunday night's (April 28) Game of Thrones episode, "The Long Night," but yep -- he was there! The singer appeared as an undead Wildling-turned-White Walker, unrecognizable in extensive, spooky makeup and costume. After the episode aired, Stapleton's wife Morgane posted a clip of the cameo on her Instagram with the caption, "My wildling is a white walker."

According to Rolling Stone, Stapleton had his management get in touch with the HBO show about the possibility of making an appearance in an episode. The country star says he's a huge fan of the series.

"I was like, you know, I would gladly fly to wherever in the world just to be a small part and get to watch that show going down. They were gracious enough to let me come participate that way," Stapleton says. An Instagram photo from the artist shows himself, his bassist JT Cure and his tour manager Jason Hecht dressed up for their roles as extras.

In the singer's portion of the episode, the Night King resurrects a phalanx of fallen soldiers, Stapleton among them, culminating in a dramatic battle scene. "They knew we weren't actors," he recounts. "So the direction was, basically, we're going to place you, and when we tell you to, open your eyes. And they trained us on how White Walkers are supposed to stand up and move when they're first waking up. We had a crash course in that."

Even after going behind-the-scenes on Game of Thrones, Stapleton still keeps a fan's perspective, and like any other fan, he can't wait to see how the series' eighth and final season ends.

"I was betting that the most Game of Thrones thing that could happen would be that the White Walkers would win. That's what I thought was going to happen and that's off the table at this point," Stapleton says. "I really don't know. Once again, they do a bang-up job  of keeping you guessing as to what will happen. That's why it's the greatest television show certainly of modern times and possibly ever."
