Chris Stapleton is doing good for his hometown in Kentucky. The Lexington native recently — and quietly — made a donation to the Special Olympics chapter in the community.

Officials at the Johnson County Special Olympics were surprised by a donation of $5,000 from Stapleton's Outlaw State of Kind fund. The charity supports causes closes to his family's heart, the Special Olympics being one of them.

"We really don't know where or how he got the initiative to send us money," Johnson County Special Olympics Local Coordinator Brenda Dyer tells WYMT. "It's kind of a surprise right now. No one seems to know."

Stapleton's unexpected donation will help the team purchase new uniforms. Without his help, they would not have been able to afford them.

"It's a big deal for our athletes. We have athletes that range from seven to sixty-two," Dyer says. "It's a big deal to feel part of a group and to look like a team and to be like any other sport around."

Chris and Morgane Stapleton's charity, the Outlaw State of Kind fund, was created in 2016 and is administered by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The fund has given donations to everything from music initiatives and disaster relief charities to health-, children- and poverty-related causes, among others.

"We've got lots and lots of love and kudos for Chris, a good homeboy who takes care of his people back at home," Dyer says. "No matter what the activity or group, he's always willing to lend a hand.
